// The number of police patrolling the streets could fall because it is not “sustainable” in the wake of government cuts, Sir Hugh Orde, one of the country's most senior policemen says.

A source at the organisation accepted that meant levels of police on the streets could be hit just as every other aspect of police work would be affected by the expected swingeing cuts. //

This will lead to more crime, and more criminals getting away with it.

Should the Police have been ring-fenced against cuts?

that's just lefty plod leaders whinning. They can cut senior officers and get more PC's on the ground. Senior police are more like Lib/Lab politicians hese days

His CV would not indicate he is a lefty. That is a desperate non-answer even by your standards Geezer.

Will anyone notice? If by bobbies on the beat we're talking about the ones who sit in laybys all day with a flask of tea and a sarnie pressing a speed camera button every now and then, it's not going to be any great loss.

I can't remember the last time I saw a bobby on the beat.
