One could not make this up.

Since we are members of the European Community, and since bidets are more in common with Europe, why are these not fitted to public toilets, before some fixture that is more common to the Middle East?

I don't think I am outraged....well not yet anyway.....I am just thinking wedge and thin end of.
A shopping centre provides facilities for its customers. What's the big deal?
I am not outraged either to be honest I don't really care. But it does seem daft!
why the french mentioned, this was Rochdale.
The French invented some strange bathroom equipment. Perhaps that's why they were mentioned?
They have a low sink which I think is for washing the feet in. Strange, very strange...
I fail to see what there is to get all het up about?

It's not like they ripped out good old fashioned bogs and installed these instead, at a massive cost is it? And so what if it did? It's a privately owned building, not paid for by your taxes.

The whole place, which obviously includes the toilets is being refurbished, so a couple of these type of toilets instead of the ones we're normally used to is hardly newsworthy.

You're really scraping the barrel of things to get racially outraged about now aren't you AOG?

A typical answer from Gromit, to an answer from a person who obviously is more polite and level headed in his answers.

Gromit when he is cornered, will first start shouting ie 'PRIVATE' and then resort to rather rude replies:

/// Welcome to modern Britain, if you do not like it, why don't YOU bu99er off to France, Italy or Switzerland, I am sure you would be more happy there.///

There was no need for that, I hope New Judge, will distance himself from Gromit's abusive remarks.
Apologies for being so very dull, but I'm not sure what the big problem is.

The shopping centre bosses aren't ripping out ALL the toilets and replacing them with Nile pans, are they?

There will be two, alongside existing facilities.

Also, in terms of hygiene, aren't these toilets more sanitary that sitting on a piece of plastic only recently vacated by someone else's bum?

Lastly, however, I have to add that using these loos is a very, very, very odd experience. I once used one in Osaka airport.

It just felt...weird...kinda like when you're right handed and you brush your teeth with your left hand.
It all passes over my head, AOG. I don’t need to heed Gromit’s advice because where I live I imagine there are few, if any Muslims. I would not know the total because I do not go about enquiring about my neighbours’ chosen religions. However, any that there are simply get on with their lives and I get on with mine. We’re all happy. Since I have no intention of ever visiting Rochdale’s Exchange shopping centre it matters not a jot to me what the owners spend their profits on. However, where they lead Rochdale Council will shortly follow (expertly advised by Mr Shahzad, no doubt).

However, your point, although it relates to privately funded facilities, is perfectly relevant to apply to taxpayer funded schemes. There are numerous of these (not all appearing only in the Daily Mail) and it is not simply the cost, it is the principle. As far as I am aware (and I have travelled quite a bit) other nations do not provide facilities for those of different religious or cultural backgrounds, whether privately or publicly funded. Those visiting or taking up residence quite rightly have to get on with whatever is provided. It is only here where such advisors as Mr Shahzad are given audience.

I have no particular wish to understand Islam or for that matter any other religion or culture. I just wish people such as Mr Shahzad would encourage those of different cultures to ours to try to assimilate to our way of life. In the long run it would be of greater benefit to us all.
when working in the middle east i found that in most modern facilities they had what they term western and eastern toilets side by side. eastern being the 'nile pan'.

i don't think they were particularly bothered about the influx of our toilets over there. although maybe one or two wee'd on the seats in protest. at least i reckon thats what must have happened.

If Muslims pay taxes and local council rates, why shouldn't part of those funds be spent on facilities that are of direct benefit to them?

...especially if it doesn't really affect anyone else using those facilities.
And a typical AOG response.

When the obvious is pointed out to him, i.e., people can spend their money how they like on their own PRIVATE property, he totally ignores it and instead starts bleating about Capital lettering or on other occasions a misspelt word or missing comma.

Do you not think that an Englishman can buy whatever toilets he wants and install them in his property, AOG?

Otherwise, you seem to be suggesting that Nile-pans should be outlawed. Or the buying of them should be outlawed.

What a strange world you inhabit.
Because they can manage quite well with those already provided.

And it does affect others using the facilities as the space taken for those we are speaking about could be utilised by the more generally accepted type, hence easing queues.

Enough from me I think!

/// If Muslims pay taxes and local council rates, why shouldn't part of those funds be spent on facilities that are of direct benefit to them? ///

In a multi-cultural / multi racial country that we now live in, wouldn't it be interesting for our local council taxes / income taxes to be spent on facilities of a direct benefit to each of the sheer numbers of religious groups and nationalities that we now have in this country?

Perhaps some would prefer rickshaws to get around, others may wish to sit on the roof of buses, elephants perhaps?

How long before we have to send a Gun-Boat up the Thames to sort them all out?
squat toilets are better for you than sitting ones. Better evacuation, less muscle strain. The users will therefore be less of a charge on the NHS, freeing it up to allow quicker treatment of less healthy Brits. So it's a win-win situation.

I always wonder how the elderly and disabled manage with those toilets. Very difficult for them.
I would not find these facilities comfortable. I mean, there seems to be no provision for parking your mug of tea or a seat so that you can finish the crossword in peace.
It's not just Muslims who use squatties (the Greeks use em too), I honestly don't see what the bother is.
The squatty potty is not a form of Islamic expression, it's just what they're used to, many other countries use these squatties and in their public loos they offer the choice, but that just shows how backward these foreigners are.
Modern Chinese houses have two (sometimes three) W.C.s the downstairs one (that anyone, guests included would use) is a squatty whereas the home owners private loos are "western", I asked why and the salesman told me because other people use them it's felt that it's cleaner and more hygenic.
Much ado about nothing.
New judge posted "Because they can manage quite well with those already provided"

Therein lies the crux of the arguement
