I have my suspessions, but, does anyone know why two US Navy people were wandering around in Afghanistan, without a local guide?

Because in their mind they had taken over the country.
Was it anywhere near the coast? Does Afghanistan even have a coast?

No, Molly, Afghanistan is, as you suspected, landlocked. All the more reason for any enemy of the US to question the motives of any American naval personnel there !
As I understand it, they were not just Americans but American Seals, the equivalent of our own Special Boat Service. I would be astonished if WE too did not have some of these elite forces in action in Afghanistan. One of their specialities is landing from the sea and scaling cliffs held by the enemy. Afghanistan has no sea but it does have plenty of cliffs and mountainous terrain...ideal locations for such troops.
The tri-service nature of running modern defence forces means that 'supporting tasks' such as logistics, intelligence, medical support, (and many others) are undertaken by service personnal who who could come from any of the three services. That much is true of UK forces, and there is no reason to suppose US forces are any different.

That's along my trail of 'suspicions' (suspessions just doesn't work), Quizmonster

When I was in the Navy (a lifetime ago) I was often sent to some extremely odd temporary duty stations to talk to, or be talked at, by some strange people. However, sometimes (not often) they were very nice places to visit.

These days there seems to be a huge number of unreasonable people who will not tolerate any ideas or action plans, unless it is there own. Makes it impossible to, "Life and let live"

Wow! the old dumb mode is really giving me some aggro lately.

"Life and let live" of course should read, "Live and let live"

Going to go lie down for a nap

I see a report has just come out that we are killing too many civilians. As these terrorists hide behind the local populations what do they expect. If the forces get it right 50% of the time we will eventually rid the country of this scum.

As terrorists don't wear uniforms maybe a solution is for the innocents to wear a recognisable garment?

It would work Rov1200, if.....

The bad-guys played by the Geneva Conventions. However, serving with UN and NATO soldiers and sailors we learned during Korean War and Vietnam War and several other 'conflicts', those who wage terrorism and civil war are absolutely convinced they have the right to commit any outrage and their actions are not governed by anyone -- in there eyes "The end justifies the means." (that's their 'end' and their 'means'.)

I speak from having lived long enough to have seen just about every sort of outrage possible; these days it is only the means of the savage delivery that really surprises me.

I feel sorry for those of you who are facing a lifetime of this type of inhuman behaviour. I still remember and have nightmares about the last 'War to End all Wars'

Sorry, didn't mean to preach, but I get a very uncomfortable feeling every time I see a young child playing a blood-thirsty video game or watching a movie full of gore and savagery.
