Southampton City Council bosses have banned staff from wearing mini-skirts and could send them home if they flout the rules.

Women staff received a memo telling them they needed to dress respectfully and wear skirts of 'reasonable' length.

The memo insists they dress in 'appropriate' clothing for their line of work, including trousers, informal dresses or skirts of 'reasonable' length - but 'not mini-skirts'.
Outraged Southampton City Council staff say they fear bosses may start prowling offices armed with a ruler or tape measure, while their union threatened to fight the ban.

The leaked email, which was sent to around 400 staff, advised men to wear collared or polo shirts, cotton trousers such as khakis or chinos with a belt, and 'dress shoes'.
It warned social workers, youth workers, educational welfare officers and others in the children's services department to 'carefully consider their work attire'.

40 years ago I wore the tiniest mini skirts imaginable to work - most of us did and there why no problems. It just makes me wonder................... !! As long are clothes do not offend or cause a problem in the type of work they do (e.g safety) then I can see no problems in letting people wear what they want, and, although most will not agree, I think that should apply to children as well. I hate school uniforms.

not at work, necessarily. Personally I'd like shop staff to wear a uniform so you can find them more easily. And all Eddie Stobart drivers have to wear a collar and tie, I believe. So I don't have a problem with employment dress codes. But there may be less point to them if they involve staff who are in the office all day rather than those who deal with the public.

I've been in education for 11 years and we've always had a dress code. I don't think rolling around the floor in a mini skirt and a low cut top would work down in the foundation stage. :p

yes, we're supposed to look professional at all times, even if you don't deal with the public.

my theory.. I have to wear a suit sometimes, therefore I flout the dress standards (within reason!) at other times :o)

When I studied Business Studies years ago, we were told about suitable clothes for the workplace. Mini-skirts, flip-flops etc weren`t acceptable. There`s nothing wrong with standards.
I don`t have to worry about it now as I wear a uniform. Much simpler!

Most places of employment operate a 'dress code' of some kind.

You wouldn't like the chef in your favourite restaurant carry out his cooking in his underpants, I am sure it would be more comfortable for him BUT????

The answer is clear if one doesn't agree with the imposed dress code then find an employer who meets your particular criteria.

Or down vibra, when it comes to low cut tops. As long as people are dressed inoffensively then I can't see the problem. And 40 years ago we used to know how to sit decently in mini skirts. I would agree that uniforms have a place in lots of employment situations, but I would resent being told what I had to wear otherwise.

And Sqad mini skirts have been back for a while, only it would appear that most girls seem to wear them over leggings, and they are definitely not as short as the ones I used to wear!!
