That programme infuriated me. All a disgusting no-hoper has to do is drag an unknown woman off the street, imprison her overnight and the "stigma" of her being abducted will be enough to force her to marry him. Some parents will rescue, others will not. 40 per cent of marriages happen like this in Chechnya and more still in Kyrghystan.
Worst of all is the imam who presided over such weddings. He assured us that bride stealing is forbidden in Islam (anyone?) but when asked how he married his wives, he giggled like a child and we discovered that he got married by kidnapping women too. Little s**t. Thankfully there are women's groups who are fighting the terrible practise, but as the newly installed president is whining about the dangers of "uncovered" women, there is little hope at the moment of Chechnya coming out of the Dark Ages.
Is Chechnya on the list to join the EU??? If it is, I can imagine the hefty hoofing in the balls British women would give any of these abductors.
It seems Borat's wedding sack was not the stuff of fiction after all.
