No no no, it's okay because Russia is going to make sure that they don't use any of the fuel to make a bomb. Sleep safe.
Is Iran default of the S.A.L.T 1 treaty with this?
Has Israel signed the SALT treaty?
Just as a matter of interest, lots af countries have nucleur weapons, just because Iran may be a bit dodgy have we any legal right to stop them having them?
S.A.L.T. was an agreement between the USA and Russia.

Do you mean the NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty)? Iran signed that, but was found to be non-compliant as long ago as 2003. Israel, despite being a nuclear power, never signed the agreement, they are strange bedfellows with North Korea in that respect.
Israel is indeed a non-signatory of the NPT (along with India and Pakistan) however N.Korea signed and ratified in 1985 before withdrawing from the treaty in 2003.
At the risk of a BGB...

THE BUSHEHR NUCLEAR POWER PLAN:
Was instigated not by Dinnerjacket and the mad Ayatolla's but by our mate, the Shah of Iran. The US and Britain didn't make any fuss about NPT in 1975 when the contract was signed. After the Islamic revolution, the west changed its tune and the project was delayed. It didn't stop the west turning a blind eye to Pakistan's Nuclear ambitions during the same period.
or Israel's. Nuclear powers within reach of Iran include Israel, China, Russia, India and Pakistan. No wonder Iran thinks there'd be a better balance of power if they had nukes too.

"...After the Islamic revolution, the west changed its tune ", no sh1t! I wonder why? Could it be that west is a little worried about loonies who have pledged to slay the infidel having nukes. Gromit you excell yourself.
My understanding of the SALT treaty is that nations were allowed to develop nuclear energy for peaceful means.
Geezer, give yourself a badge, the idea that someone who possesses nuclear weapons is also stupid enough to use them is the exact definition of a nuclear deterrant.
Personally I don't think Iran poses a threat to the region even with nuclear arms, I don't feel Israel has the ability to attack it even if it does, furtermore I understand it would be a serious breach of international law if it did.

That was why I included the reference to the west turning a blind eye to the Wahhabis in Pakistan. If anything, they are worse than the Persians I their fervent fundamentalism, yet we let them develop nuclear weapons without any sanctions, IAEA inspections, oe threat of bombing raids.
To be fair to Pakistan, the NWFP has always been pretty ungovernable, we never truly managed it, that's why after the Sepoy Revolt (1857 to 1859, Sir Evelyn Wood tells a great tale from that era when he was chasing Tantya Tope, but that's another story) the Muslims opened up madrassas there (Deoband) because we couldn't get to them easily.
After the revolt we sponsored a Sikh and Hindu middle class to alleviate problems in the future, we also ignored Muslims in this endeavour, divide and conquer.
The Wahabis are a problem, especially for the Kashmiris as their brand of Islam is an anathema to them.
Geezer if Iran are such a threat to the world could you tell me please since 1979 (the foundation of the Islamic republic) what countries have Iran invaded or attacked?

dinnerjacket has pledged to wipe Israel off the map. Is that in some way ambigous?
Are you fluent in Farsi Geezer?

To quote his exact words in farsi:

"Imam ghoft een rezhim-e ishghalgar-e qods bayad az safheh-ye ruzgar mahv shavad."

That passage will mean nothing to most people, but one word might ring a bell: rezhim-e. It is the word "Regime", pronounced just like the English word with an extra "eh" sound at the end. Ahmadinejad did not refer to Israel the country or Israel the land mass, but the Israeli regime. This is a vastly significant distinction, as one cannot wipe a regime off the map. Ahmadinejad does not even refer to Israel by name, he instead uses the specific phrase "rezhim-e ishghalgar-e qods" (regime occupying Jerusalem).

So this raises the question.. what exactly did he want "wiped from the map"? The answer is: nothing. That's because the word "map" was never used. The Persian word for map, "nagsheh", is not contained anywhere in his original farsi quote, or, for that matter, anywhere in his entire speech. Nor was the western phrase "wipe out" ever said. Yet we are led to believe that Iran's President threatened to "wipe Israel off the map", despite never having uttered the words "map", "wipe out" or even "Israel".

The full quote translated directly to English:

"The Imam said this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time".
That's rhetoric for internal consumption Geezer.

If you're leader of a middle Eastern Country pledging to wipe Israel off the map is like a leader of the Tory Party pledging never to surrender to the IRA.

It's just playing to the crowd to try to hide some of your internal problems and opposition.

Iran know that Israel have a vastly superior force curtosy of US "charity" not to mention US support - a preemptive attack on Israel would provoke massive and immediate retalliation - and he knows this.

So why would Iran want Nuclear weapons?

Well can you see the US attacking nuclear North Korea?

Nope? funny that! For Iran nuclear weapons are an insurance policy to make sure that they are not pushed about by the US
Gromit, good googling, but rather than give the impression this is all your own work, you really ought to quote your sources. ;o)
Naomi,

Actually, it is another ABer's work but I do not know who. The Wipe Israel off the map quote crops up often, and this ABer (I know not who) used to counter with the translation I posted. I saved it as a desktop post-it note and I have used it before. Unfortunately AB search did not come up with it, so I was unable to attribute it to anyone. I assumed other ABers would realise I am not fluent myself in Farsi.
Here you are - exactly as you've written.

Strange how no one else has come up with the same translation, but then I don't assume that Mr Norouzi an infallible source of factual information, and I wouldn't guarantee he doesn't have his own agenda either.
