Burning of the Koran
Why is it when Muslims are burning western countries flags' there is not a peep from the western world but when someone in the Western world threatens to burn a copy of the Koran (which like it or not is just a book) all hell breaks loose from the Muslim world.

The burning of any other religion's holy book probably wouldn’t have even got into the mainstream news. So why does the burning of the Koran by a group of nobodies get into almost every news outlet in the world and warrant a quote from the the US Attorney General, who said that the idea is "idiotic and dangerous"? Why should such a silly stunt be 'dangerous'?...

I saw the TV interview with Rev Terry Jones.
"When do we stop ? How much do we back down? How many times do we back down?" he said.
"Instead of us backing down, maybe it's to time to stand up. Maybe it's time to send a message to radical Islam that we will not tolerate their behaviour."
I can't understand the connection. Koran-burning sends a message to ALL muslims not just the radical ones and I fail to see *any* positive outcome that could come about by these actions.

I think the very suggestion shows that religious nuts have not progressed far since the Middle Ages. They still feel insulting the opposition to be 'one up' is a better option than creating peace, understanding, and tolerance of minor differences of opinion. Maybe the human race don't have it in them to get past this sort of rivalry. Bitter pill to swallow, to accept that this is your species.
It is regretable that a 'man of God' thinks that such a petulent act of rebellion will be interpereted by any radical Muslims as a sign of defiance.
One of the main reasons for the conflict between radical Muslims and the West, is the wilful inability of Western politicians and media to grasp the concept of faith in the lives of Muslim people.
For most Chrisitan people, their faith is a part of their life, which hopefully they practice in an atmosphere of tolerence and love - to do any other would be to miss the point of Christian teaching.
For most Muslim people, their faith IS their life, woven into the fabric of their daily life to a far more intense level.
If you add the extremist mind-set, you have a body of people who will cheefully die for their beliefs, and ensure that anyone whom they see as offending their faith dies as well. It is a level of inborn hatred that is difficult for the average Westerner to understand.
To invade the territory of such extremists is simply to convince them even more of the justice of their actions - to burn their scriptures will simply enforce their belief that the West hates Islam and revenge is appropriate.
The misguided actions of this foolish and naiive minister will undoubtedly cause a reaction - and it is not going to be the 'Heavens, what were we thinking of! The West is right, we are all murderers, we must stop right now ...' he imagines, rather more the 'Another act of infamy by the infidels, which must be revenged ... let's kill an invading soldier each, to make us feel vindicated ...'
Can this minister really think that his proposal is going be helpful in any way, other than the self-aggradisment he will receive?

The thing that keeps people together is ritual . The more ritual the greater the brain washing . The more ritual the more blind you become to the failings of the religion . Look at the Roman Catholics if the Pope was caught red handed abusing a child most RCs would still not accept it . Religion breeds fear . I've met RCs who were trembling because they might miss a service. How much more so is it with the Muslims who pray 5 times a day it is as much a part of their life as breathing . So the burning of the Quaran is in their eyes a major crime and must be punished . Fortunately we have matured enough to not let it destroy our judgement especially within the C of Es.
The burning of any religions holy book is wrong. To show such disregard for others beliefs makes your own so much less than you believe it to be.
One thing I will say for fundamentalist religions such as (hard line) Islam. They have more faith. They have so much faith they believe all others to be utterly wrong. They don't mind telling you this and they done mind telling you they intend to eradicate you and/or your religion. They don't mind doing it either.
Other than the crusades (that fizzled out ) name the other religions that believe their doctrin to such an extent.
Almost every religion in the world believes theirs is the one true religion. The one tru way to God and the heaven he offers.
Perhaps one is right, perhaps they are all just part of the one true Gods vision.

I thought a link may be useful since no one had entered one.
/// Nato chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Tuesday blasted the church's plans, telling reporters that burning Korans violated the Nato alliance's "values".///
I wonder what values are these? as regards to it putting US troops at risk, I thought the Taliban was throwing everything they had got, at NATO troops now.
Will they be more lenient if those in the U.S. don't burn the Koran?

////Incidentally, I don't agree with burning books, and I think the action proposed by this Christian group relegates them intellectually to the level of the people they are condemning.////
That ^^^^was before breakfast, and this one perhaps after,
///I don't believe this group should reconsider its proposals because there will be 'consequences'. That's tantamount to conceding to the demands of bullies.////
As for burning the Quran then if someone believes that by doing that Islam can be eradicated then that person need to start at nursery level again. Unfortunately in over 1000 years West has not understood relation of Muslims with their faith and respect they give to their prophets and books. And to be honest I do not expect them to start doing it now as crusades against Islam have never finished or stopped. All I hope that Muslims must record their protest but only in the most peaceful way but unfortunately everyone does not think the same way.

Keyplus, craftily edited, but not good enough. I responded to Boxtops' fears of 'consequences', I don't believe in conceding to the demands of bullies, and I didn't contradict myself. Here is the unabridged version.
//I don't believe this group should reconsider its proposals because there will be 'consequences'. That's tantamount to conceding to the demands of bullies. They shouldn't burn the Koran because it's a stupidly futile exercise that will achieve nothing.//

what rot. if it was a group of muslims in north london burning the bible there would be no end of aog threads. probably an article in the daily mail as well.
burning the koran is dangerous because of current operations gpoing on around the world, and because of the safety of all americans in the world working in embasssies or for priavte companies.
the pastor is an imbecile.

Ankou, it isn't rot. It's fact. Islam flexes its muscle at every criticism, and instead of having the courage to speak out against its irrationality, the world pussyfoots around it and concedes. Yes, the pastor is an imbecile, but not for the reason you claim.
Ummmm, I suspect if people need to compare religions, they pick on two of the big ones.
