for Labour, the choice was between a moderate Old Leftie, like Ed, and a centraliser/moderniser like David - you'd expect the latter to win, but of course centraliser/moderniser nowadays means "Blair and Cameron", and Labour voters suspect they'll need something a bit different to win the next election. They probably won't win it unless something goes seriously wrong with the Tories - but it might. Anyway, the next election, and probably the one after that, are Cameron's to lose.
