If the existing law was properly enforced youngsters couldn't buy alcohol for themselves . The problem is more than that though. In Britain we have now got a culture of binge drinking and alcohol abuse the effects of which are to be seen both in public and in private. Pricing isn't the answer. Greece, for example, has a very low incidence of alcohol -related illness but the booze there is very cheap. It doesn't have the glorying in getting drunk which is so marked in Britain, either. The same attitude to binge drinking is found in most of Europe, whatever the cost of the drink. Youngsters who grow up surrounded by older people, particularly those a few years older, who have our attitude to drinking will adopt it and treat booze accordingly
