How can women protect themselves from attack?

It now seems a weekly occurrence for a lone woman to be either raped or killed. There are numerous defence classes available but it seems they are not very well attended. There are some simple techniques which women should be aware of and do not take any practice in using them.

For instance a well publicised method is to use two fingers to jab in the opponents eyes causing him some discomfort,

This method was also used successfuly recently when a person was grabbed by an alligator and he managed to free himself by jabbing his fingers into its eyes so releasing him.

This may be of help:

Are there any other types of techniques?

oi AB this is self defence kindly don't alter my words ^^ s h i t
pixi you're on, I reckon alot of folks aren't too well prepared and won't react quick enough.
Is it stranger danger that women need to be worrying about? Most of the murderous attacks on women seem to come from ex partners.
I was attacked by some nutter in my own house....I don't think he was expecting me to fight like he did and I ended up chasing him down the street. Thank God I wasn't wearing any shoes because having no carpets, if I was still in my going out shoes I would slipped as soon as he tried to get me on the floor.

His face is etched in my mind....one day I might bump into him again. Then he'll know what an attack is..!!

I think it's hard knowing how you would react.

I was walking home alone up a badly lit alleyway by the side of a park (I lived part way up it) one night and just saw a guy in a hoodie leap out of the trees to the park side and leap at me as if to attack. I just froze initially and then managed to run and was trying to get into my house in a panic before hearing them laughing and it turning out to be my idiot of a housemate who thought it was funny. Needless to say I moved out soon after but it made me question how I would respond if attacked for real, I don't think I anticipated how much the initial fear would affect me.

Not long after, a lady was attacked in the alley, stabbed 7 times by a nutter with 2 knives, they even did a Crimewatch reconstruction but never heard if they caught him. Things like that really make you think.

Some of the lads at uni in a mission to get me to take more care walking home at night proved very effectively that however hard I fought them they could always overpower me although I've never learnt any proper techniques and didn't, obviously, try anything like eye gouging!

I posted a thread not long ago after there were a number of local sex attacks by more than one attacker. Will find and post a link as to the suggestions there. If I hadn't randomly popped into the office for something I'd have forgotton, one of the attacks could have been me. They have caught at least one now but there are quite a few more around including recent attacks around the city centre. I carry an alarm and always have my keys in my pocket and am much more vigilent now.

I'm honestly not sure how I would react if I was attacked.
From where, can you buy rape alarms ?

All well and good saying "Kick them in the nuts", "Poke them in the eyes" etc but do you think these nutters will give you the opportunity to do this?

Surely if they are intending to do you harm they will attack in such a way that the victim is unable to react just through shock alone
Well I managed to fight back Elvis...maybe he was just a crap attacker..
Thanks for that .

Operating once for 10 mins - is this a common feature of all rape alarms - i.e they only operate for a certain period of time in total?
And well done to you ummmmm for fighting back, feisty little fooker x ;o)
He's just lucky the hurley was just out of reach...otherwise he would have got a proper hiding :-)

It's horrible though and really has a bad effect. Even now, years later, I'm really nervous walking in the dark. Even if it's only early evening.
I suppose Berti...in case it goes off by accident..
Unless i read the comments incorrectly - it can only be used for ten minutes - then needs replacing
