What if Chris Jefferies is not responsible for the death of Joanna Yeates? He is now inextricably linked to her murder. Even if he's not charged or not found guilty, how could he ever recover his reputation completely?

I was saying that to OH last night..
It could destroy some people but it could provide opportunties also- for example he could sell his story in the papers
<<<<Even if he's not charged or not found guilty, how could he ever recover his reputation completely?<<<<

By finding the murderer.
Also, if he's innocent it could make the real killer relax and make a mistake.
Remember Colin Stagg? The newspapers did him no favours. But they were probably acting on leaks from the police.
I wonder how that man who was implicated in the Madeline McCann disappearance coped afterwards especially as they haven't found her. If he is innocent then I dread to think, I think the fact I can only say "if" says it all really.
// We thought 'Prof. Strange' was Gay say ex-pupils //

is a bit of a Daily Mail classic headline

// Police quiz 'nutty professor' with a blue rinse // - another classic

If it wasn't so sad it would be funny.
Nutty professor with a blue rinse. Must be guilty...of something
This is the reason that some of us advocate not naming suspects in any case until found guilty. Mud sticks I'm afraid
They say the boyfriend was innocent as he had an alibi. But wasn't he the first person to know she was missing when he turned up at her flat. Couldn't she have still be alive until he turned up and then killed her?
I don't think the police would have arrested him unless they were more thn vaguely sure that they were going to charge him.

If they turn out to be wrong, we will have to see how things go from there, but I would guess that far more is going on behind closed doors than the media know about - although that hasn't stopped the Mail from smearing him all over its front page.

Fortunately, having a weird penchent for blue hair dye does not in itself make you a murderer - otherwise a lot of Mail readers would be helping the police with their enquiries even now!
It's on the front page of The Express as well...
