peopel were always missed, on the 1901 census for Rainford that I looked at recently, the last page of the enumerators book listed a large family all called smith, with a note by the enumerator written in the 'occupation' section, it read 'large group of travelling people, no definate information obtainable'

with the modern booklets, they are dropped off and picked up, the enumerator will not know who has been missed out.

Good question Daisy. My friend is the product of a mixed race marriage - mother white, father black - but my friend's skin is white. Nevertheless she considers herself black. No idea why.

There was a similar situation in the second half of the 18th century at the start of the Industrial Revolution. Huge numbers of people were needed to staff the new mills, yet 90% of the population were needed to work on the land and in cottage industry. Britain therefore encouraged large numbers of immigrants to come from Africa and Asia to work in the mills. By the end of the 18th century, 10% of the population of some areas of Manchester were black and cities like Bradford were similar.

Then immigration stopped. What then happened was that most black men married and reproduced with local white women. Their children were 50% white. Those children then reproduced with white women so their offspring were 75% white. They reproduced with white women so their offspring were 87% white....and on. By the 1930s very few people in the north of England even knew they had a fully black ancestor. The only sign is when someone today has an 'olive complexion' and those are the black genes showing themselves again.

The same will happen if immigration stops soon as it must. In 200 years time the black genes would have become so dilute almost everyone wil be white again. The only exception might be Asians who only reproduce within their own group.

So Daisy, in two generations. You often see it now with the children born of Caribbean grandparents. Unless they stay within their group their children become progressively white.

Censuses are a good thing for giving a snapshot of the population but does NOT include illegals.

Judging by previous statistics there should only be about 5 million immigrants in Britain. So how come we're outnumbered when it comes to schoolchildren?

To achieve your figures there must be at least 10 million undeclared immigrants living in Britain.

rov1100 is correct, how many of our immigrants will bother to fill in their census paper? And if they do they will most likely stretch the truth.

But some of the other posts amaze me, there doesn't seem to be much pride left in one's nationality.

India kicked out the British, Africa kicked us out also, and most of the rest of our Empire now have their own independence, and quite rightly too.

But the question I wish to ask now is, when is Britain going to get back it's independence?
