If your average Afghan knows a few words of any language it's not likely to be italian or French or German it's going to be English. Maybe he doesn't but I'll bet you someone in his familly or someone he knows does.

France is widely spoken in Tunisia there are cultural links there - these guys are no more trying to get to the UK than they are trying to get to Australia.

Egyptians - well they would gravitate here or France - there are a lot of ties between the two countries.
Now what about Iran if that goes pork-belly up - a lot of the intelliensia were educated in French (such as at the Sorbonne and Haute-Ecoles)......
