Can anyone remember that I was convinced I saw Alan Bennett sat on a rocking chair in a craft workshop in North Norfolk on my recent holiday? (No, I hadn't been drinking). Well, I have since discovered that Mr B was indeed in that area around that time - so it was him.
I know he's quite an insular soul & not one for too much limelight, but how I wish I had gone up to him & said how much I admired his work, particularly his collaborations with Thora Hird and how 'The Cream Cracker under the Settee' made me cry because Thora always reminded me of my favourite nanna.
Not sure sqad - I think he twigged I had recognised him, but I've always understood him to be a quiet unassuming man, I would have felt a fool if he'd told me to 'bog off'...
I really wish I had though - I do admire his work.
I think any writer, or muisician, is usually polite to the public when greeted in a respectful manner - and i am sure Mr B would have been exactly that.
Most famous people are simply wary of drawing a crowd when they sing an autograph, which can turn into either a two-hour signathon, or the need to move on, which causes resentment.
I saw one of the Dracular men in Kent years ago
and he's buried next to my B.I.L, (dead now of course )
I picked his trilby up for him when it blew off, I'm nice like that :-)
Christopher Lee???
