Did anyone watch the last steam engine journey Dr Fred Dibnah made with his friend & his two sons, from up North to Buckingham Palace to receive hs MBE? What an achievement.

I fell asleep in the middle of it, but woke up just in time to see him donned in his top hat & tails.

Sadly, they don't make them like him anymore.

Yes, just saw the end of it.  Long ago, before any sort of industrial archaeology was taken notice of, he had a few programmes on about his demolition of chimneys. Later, when he had retired from steeple-jacking and chimney demolition, he became a personality in the steam engine world, as he had time to do his renovations.  Once my ex and self were going home from an industrial archaeology week-end in the north of England and just happened on a steam fair, with Fred being the main attraction in the steam-roller races.  A fitting end to the week-end!

Yes, we used to really enjoy watching all his steeple jack & chimney demolition programmes too. He was a brilliant, clever man with lots of different talents. Let's hope it lives on in his sons.

You are so lucky to have met him. My husband & me would have loved to have done the same. Maybe one day..........you never know!
