before special cat and dog food?

They obviously did and, as far as I know, before 1920 dog biscuits were available as treats but no specific food. Now it is a huge industry, supermarket shelves dedicated to it and we even have companies that deliver nothing but pet food.

Get the feeling we've been had?

They were just fed scraps from the table i believe and the cats were used for catching the mice in barns, etc.
Our dog gets a chewy bar to help clean its teeth, another for its joints, and Schmackos as a treat.
It's better looked after than I am.
Those were the days when you picked up 'scraps' and bones from the butcher for free. Nowadays the 'scraps' and all the other general meat waste is fed to us in all the processed meat and re- contituted meat that we eat.
Dad always insists on calling it regugitated, he's not far wrong some times.
Definitely agree and yes we've been had. With an old cat and a young kitten I'm now expected to buy senior and kitten variety. Plus if I had one, food for neutered males plus treats that target hairballs or healthy coat or...
When i was little i used to get sent to the pet shop for coley to feed the cat. It was only pennies, look in the freezers in the supermarket now and its being fed to us...and it certainly doesn't cost pennies anymore.

My dogs were always fed scraps but I do admit to a morning Boneo and an evening Good Boy choc drop.

I never tried a dog biscuit but I do love the smell of old fashioned pet shops
HC, I have often wondered. Now we have wet food (jelly, gravy, supermeat, gourmet), dry food, young cat, old cat, neutered cat, kitten. For Funks Sake.

I have 4 cats and you can bet your life that only half of them will like what I serve up at any one time. Whiskas and their "9 out of 10" thing be damned. Eat mice you fussy felines!!!!

You can even buy special milk for kittens and puppies!
Mine loved tea.
Oh yes forgot about Whiskers cat milk (because these days cow's milk is bad for cats)
My cat loves peas and tomato sauce.
Yeah but your cat is just daft ummmm.
I know. He's so grumpy, just like my granddad!!
My dogs love salad, cucumber in particular, also apple peel, daft dogs. X
On the day I was born, last of 9 children, dad bought mum a present - a puppy! He never had a collar or lead, just took himself off or laid in the middle of the road. He came in for dinner which was what ever we had. He and I were 16 when he died. He never went to the vets or suffered any ailments.
I can remember my mother buying pluck from the butchers for our cat. I think another name was lights. It was all the innards that didn't get sold as meat.
My cat had a peculiar taste in food, as well as normal catfood she liked mandarin oranges, curry, malt loaf and Harvey's Bristol Cream. She used to take this of my fingers 10 fingers so we didn't double dip!
Yes we've been had, and what's more - what's happened to white chalky dog turds!?
