....who was too nervous and queasy to stay with his wife at the hospital while she was in labour

he stayed at home with a bottle of whisky, occasionally phoning the hospital for an update

after almost emptying the bottle, he phoned the cricket score - line by mistake, and was informed that all ten were out....and the last two were ducks
