Higher mpg = higher petrol prices?

As we all know cars are getting more efficient at fuel consumption.My car does 35 to the gallon but new cars do 50+ to the gallon.Is this increase in efficiency related to the rising cost of fuel rather than oil prices like they keep telling us? If people are doing more mpg then they are filling up less,if they are filling up less then the petrol co's profits go down therefore their prices go up Does this sound reasonable and if so are we being duped?
