On radio 2 to-day somebody described a singer as a genius. What a load of bo11ocks, singers are not genius's ( is that right). They just have mal formed vocal chords.
Einsten was a genius, singers are just lucky their vocal chords allow them to pass air over them in a melodious manner.
genius is usually related to intelligence so Einstein yes, a singer no, a songwriter is talented but not a genius, plus some people might call john lennon a great songwriter others might find his music akin to a cat with its a.r.s.e stuck in barbed wire, whereas einstein coming up with the theory of relativity is universally brilliant
the word genius has been overused to describe some very dodgy people these days. The true meaning of a genius just doesnt enter the heads of most people these days.
everyone from repulsive bands to jade goody's embarressing TV excepts have all been given the "genius" tag by random people on tv.
Seriously dot you think Peter Kay is a genius? He's funny but he's not exactly original is he? And like a lot of modern comedians, he's highly derivative.
peter kay like all comedians sits with a pen in his mouth for hours thinking up funny things to say, its all staged half the time you can predict the punchline before it arrives, you cant stage true comedy it has to be spontaneous
genius noun (geniuses or in sense 5 genii)
1 someone who has outstanding creative or intellectual ability.
2 such ability.
3 a person who exerts a powerful influence on another (whether good or bad).
4 Roman mythol a guardian spirit.
5 formal a quality or attitude with which something (eg a country or a period of time) is identified or typically associated Rational inquiry was the genius of the century.
ETYMOLOGY: 16c: Latin, meaning 'guardian spirit' or 'deity'.
A lot of these comedians are a moody, stressed out bunch in real life, the stress of staying at the top, I wouldnt call them genius.
Peter Kay mimics a lot of his work from a whole range of classic comedians. I thought it was funny when he was speaking on "I love the 70's" so knowledgeably about some of the lesser known shows, chances are he would have been too young to have such an opinion at the time.
isnt a genius defined by an individuals opinion ?
Brunel, Einstein, Gates !
is Schmacher a genius or just a decent driver ???
was Armstrong just a pilot ???
if someone from an Amazonian tribe were to find a cure for cancer, would they be a genius or just lucky to have stumbled across a westerner that knew what they had ???
thank you Corbyloon for posting that clarification...I find it strange when people attempt to correct others misguidedly (ie the fact that the word genius is more or less the same as an outstanding talent). Why do people do that?
