Abi had just moved to Glasgow from Israel in the 60's and moved into a tenement flat. He was feeling the cold so lit a coal fire which quickly set the chimney alight.
The fire brigade arrived, having been called by a neighbour, and put out the fire and Abi wrote to the Fire Service to express his thanks. When the Fire Master got the letter he telephoned the station commander to pass on the thanks and asked what they had said to the man because he was delighted to be greeted in a stranged country in his native language without telling the firemen where he was from. The station commander replied we just said "S'yer lum"
