This is not a derogatory term for black people - it isn't even spelt the same. I wouldn't dream of using such an insult. The word I typed describes a grudging, penny-pinching or mean person, and has a quite different origin. Teach the AutoMod etymology! I thought 'churl' could also mean someone of low birth? 'My idea of 'misanthrope' doesn't really fit as that's someone who just doesn't like the rest of the human race, never mind the social status of the misanthrope.
