How do you interpret this saying? I think its meant to mean someone is a liar, but it actually comes out as though they can't lie very well.

I think it means the person is honest
just means someone couldnt tell the truth if it killed em
I would imagine it means that he is a compulsive liar, but I agree it comes out as though they can't lie very well.
Probably used to describe someone who is devious and sly but slightly the right side of dishonest
Basically means, He is so crooked he couldnt lie out straight in bed.

Brilliant Ratter, that makes perfect sense - its about them being crooked rather than lying as in not telling the truth. Perhaps if it was said 'couldn't lay straight in bed' it would be more obvious.
