A commonly seen road sign says "Road liable to flooding" and it irritates me! I think it should be "liable to flood" or "prone to flooding". What do others think? Am I being picky?
Yes, but I'm just the same about such things, I am a total nerd with it but all my friends are aware! I am sure you are correct, it will annoy me now. I don't drive, so maybe don't notice signs as drivers do but I have seen such signs. It doesn't sound right at all now you mention it!!
picky. Liable to flood, to me, implies that it IS going to happen regardless of whether it is dry or rainy, whereas liable to flooding indicates that it MAY happen if the weather dictates.
Well, Hymie, the UK used to have those same 'Accident Black Spot' signs all over the country. Then Mrs Thatcher decided that they were a bad advert for the government and councils, and led to the public asking, ''If it's an Accident Black Spot, why aren't those in authority doing something to make the road ther safer?''. So she had them removed.
