Bridewell

In a couple of crime novels I have read recently, there has been reference made to a'Bridewell', being a police station with cells. Anyone know where this saying originates pse.

From Bride Well, i.e. (St.) Bride's Well, a holy well in London, near which Henry VIII had a ‘lodging’, given by Edward VI for a hospital, afterwards converted into a house of correction.
