American gun nuts often use the phrase "These cold dead hands". What does this mean?

It's just their way of saying that the only way the authorities will ever be able to take their guns away is when they are dead and even then they'd have to prise the weapon from their death-grasp! That is, they'll never willingly give them up.
In the UK we say such and such will happen "over my dead body"
gun nut was specifically Charlton Heston, I believe
