What is the meaning of "backhander" in the following sentences?

 

"Was there anything on the side�a little extra from a lawyer, a slice of the pie from a litigant, a nice backhander as the Brits like to say?" 
"Absolutely not."

A backhander is a bribe or something offered in order to get the result you want. You might offer a council official money to get a decision made in your favour, such as having a bus-route moved to another street than your own, say, so that you do not suffer the noise, pollution etc.

The first two are not necessarily bribes - at least one, the Brits might say was a 'refresher' - to refresh interest in the lawyer who might otherwise get bored.

Back hander is a bribe and is therefore a crime.....
