its a world wide distress call ,but where did it come from and why do we use it ..just curious

I don't think we use that, Stewey.
Heard it in films, always presumed it was cos Mae West had large chest.
That's it, thetaliesin. Maybe it's just a American term then.
Mae Wests are droop handlebars on bicycles.
