Why do people keep writing &quot around various words or phrases?

they don't - the AB system does it for them when they least expect it. Seems to be how it reads a double quotation mark... sometimes.

It may depend upon which browser software you are using.  I have never had it show up in any of my (over 300) posts and I am using Internet Explorer in Windows XP Home Edn.  I have my suspicions that it may also be caused by copying and pasting text from another application into AnswerBank

It happened to an answer of mine today for the very first time. All I wanted to do was inset a quotation between two normally left-aligned paragraphs. I correctly - or so I thought - used AnswerBank's own system for doing that, but still finished up with the html gobbledigook when I posted my response. Ah well...what the hey!
