It is actually an abbreviation for "Mistress"

It isn't, it's the shortening of mistress and so is missus if you see what I mean.

Oh and you didnt need to be married in eighteenth century to be called mistress - just old [or mature]

Spinsters of a certain age were called mistress - or missus....
