Years ago there used to be an ice lolly type thing called a Jubbly. It was in a waxy carton and was triangular in shape. You used to snip one corner of the carton and as it started to melt sort of drink it. A forerunner of the Slush Puppy. As kids we used love this and always called them "Lubbly Jubblies".

I won't dispute freshdaisy's explanation as to the 'Jubbly' origin, but the phrase 'Lovely Jubbly' was certainly popularised by the character Del Boy (David Jason) in the 1980s BBC sitcom 'Only Fools and Horses'.

Sorry, I of course meant shaneystar's explanation.
apparently because of Del Boys use of the phrase, they are bringing back the ice lolly Jubbly!
Oooooh.....Lubbly !

the ad went

"Lovely Jubbley

Lovely Jubbley orange drink"

I used to love those, only thing was they would take ages to freeze. No home freezers back then!

They used to cost 4d unfrozen and an extra ha'penny frozen from our local offie (we didn't have a fridge at home)

-If you remember these Shaneystar, you're knocking on a bit.

I had an authentic jubbly last week, first time Id seen them for ages. It tasted of undiluted orange squash.
Well GF if you can remember how much they cost you must be knocking on with me!!
I used to love those little bottles of orange you got from the milkman. Also Corona.I bet you remember that!

 Touche

The bottles of delicious OJ were one third of a pint and cost 5d each( I used to help the milkman)

Couldn't afford Corona-my dad was a one-armed window cleaner's mate and all 14 of us lived in a shoebox.

Bit like us then ..with a meat safe out in the back yard. No fridge to keep your Jubbly in and the milk going sour in the scullery!
A shoebox GruntFuttock? LUXURY! I lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank.....

wouldn't know about that Corbyloon-we didn't come into contact with the upper classes.....

Well Freshdaisy you now know all about Jubblies and the absolute poverty we have had to endure !!
