Which is the preferred form: "information on" or "information about"?
Are there differences between British and American English here?

Take Live-8 concerts as an example.  MargeB, would you really say "I want information OF the live-8 concerts"?.  I doubt it.  I would be equally happy with either "I want information ON the live-8 concerts" or "I want information ABOUT the live-8 concerts".  In fact, now I come to think about it, I think the use of ON is more the vernacular, and ABOUT is the the more grammatically correct.
I think gen2 is right (I don't think the difference is geographical) and I think MargeB is in disinformation mode.

"disinformation mode."

Can we have a report button for people like jno who make you laugh out loud while sitting on your own? It's embarassing and concerning.

lol. Must try that some time. I need a disinformation buddy...

Maybe also one for datinformation

jno, is dat the information you speak on?

Yes, but what I want to know is whether MargeB is providing disinformation on the use of the preposition or disinformation about.

Any reliable thesaurus will show that 'on' and 'about' are synonyms in the situation you describe, so it doesn't matter which you use and neither is actually 'preferable'!

Many thanks, QM. One of your rulings ex cathedra is worth more than a thousand thessauri. I did look in Webster's but found only "information about". My personal preference is "information on", and I just wondered if there were any transatlantic issues here.
Can you recommend any online resources with a more British slant?

Dear X, I've never actually used it myself but you will find The Times' style guide by clicking here It may provide suitable information. Cheers...and thanks for your kind comment above.
