I am interested in finding out where sayings derive from, and wondered if anyone knows of any books that could help me out ? I already have the Brewers Fables book, but that isn't quite what I am after.

Any help would be most welcomed

I've got this_one - can't swear it's always right, though. There are also online sites that handle this sort of thing eg this.

I've got "Lock Stock & Barrel" - amazon it.

I've found the Oxford Library of Words and Phrases very helpful.

It's in three volumes:- Quotations, Proverbs and Word Origins.

Red Herrings and white Elephants is used by the Sunday times
