English pronunciation is not easy particularly for a foreigner. eg Cough, Bough,Rough, though, through, etc.
Tuvok: I understood every word of that. I suppose it helps that I'm part Scottish and I do actually sometimes talk like that.
Why would anyone say armond ? There is no r in the word.

Blow defective dictionaries, never ever heard them called anything other than how they are spelt. al mond. Oh ok more allmund probably but that's basically the same thing. Ultimately it's how it's spoken that dictates the pronunciation.

Now how do you pronounce banana ? Do you say beefsteak, skyscraper, intestine, or jabberwocky ?
I say ammond

I'm not insinuating that one or the other pronunciation is WRONG (sorry can't do italics) just wondering -as a person who has not had English as their Langue Maternelle, which is CORRECT. I'm interested to know the regional variations. I was taught to say Almond with a silent 'L' and because my first language is French it comes easy.
which one, Retro, know most of the gals schools, my sisters were at two of them....one recently taken over by Sedbergh
Is that Al as in Al Capone?

yes Casterton,Both girls went and its such a shame its closed as an all girls school.
It's aamund for me.
it's all nuts to me
It wasn't cutting the ice financially, so best to have done what they have done with up the road - I'm an OB of that mental institution and spent many an hour pursuing the young ladies of Casterton when we could escape. Dated one Clare whose father ran a well-know fish and chip shop in Ilkley!
I also say aa-mund, same as the river.

...but my wife from the South of England pronounces it more like "AWEl-mond"

She also laughs every time I say "Potato"... even now, after 20years.
20 years - your wife must be a bleeding saint
This is a rather tricky subject as most people think their pronunciation is correct but it defeats me why anyone would call it plarster when there is no "r" in the word similarly with draw"r"ing why complicate matters! As regards the question I say aa-mond with a silent "l".

who cares?
With 'almond' both pronunciations are correct (with or without l)
I'm surprised that so many people don't pronounce the L.
ammund
