THANX  hAd an Idea it was,
religion q's usually get posted in body and soul, occasionally history and myths
Woofgang, I'm occasionally accused of being somewhat pedantic, so I understand your sentiments.  However, the question wasn't religious, per se, it was, as this Topic is entitled, a question about a Phrase or Saying...

Its a bit ironic when you hear it as they are beheading somebody!

If you believe in the act just commited your 'God' is not great.

yes i thought so

google akbar and akhbar

akhbar al yawm - the news today. You see that there are quite a few journals with akhbar in the title and this is because it means news.

Akbar - kebiir is big and the comparative (bigger) and superlative (biggest) are one word called an elative. Very big. The elative always had this form - long a-first triliteral-second triliteral- long a thrid triliteral

kebiir - akbar - the triliteral is k-b-r

jameel ajmaal - the triliteral is j-m-l (new or pretty I can never remember which)

The kh is that sound in loch. Arabic also has a k and also the q (a sort of throaty k). A lot of the English go straight for the kh every time - coz it sounds more instantly Arab.

I wasn't commenting on the question, just offering a little help as missmooncat said she didn't know if she was in the right section and we had no religeous beliefs section
