Edmond Hoyle (1672 - 1769) wrote several books on the rules of card-games, the first of them on whist in 1742. As a result, his name became associated with the idea of "the right way to do things" in other areas, too, from the early 20th century.
Thank God/Feck/Goodness it doesn't refer to Fred Hoyle. He was a total tosspot/dickwad/prat! No offense intended!
