It opens 'tee', having nothing to do with drinking 'tea'. It was originally just a jokey duplication of the 'T' sound, as in 'T-total', to suggest an utterly complete giving up of alcohol. It became popular after it was used in a speech by Richard Turner, a great believer in abstinence, in 1833.
