Laying Or Lying?
29 Answers
Hi, I'm trying to write something but I'm stuck on the correct word to use. I want to say I was "lying in a field full of buttercups", but should it be lying or laying?
Have tried Google, but am still unsure.
Thanks :-)

Laying certainly does have to do with eggs, but its colloquial meaning also has to do with sexual activity! "He was laying his girlfriend" means something very different from "He was lying with his girlfriend." The first is naughty and the second is not.
The answer to your question is definitively "lying"!

Laying would only be correct if you were a hen or similar laying eggs in the field (or laying a table or flagstones but you'd need to mention the table/flagstones for it to be understandable). I suppose you could also be describing what you were doing with a partner but I think there are more romantic terms that can be used.
