Its Michael Crawford's -- the wuss in "Some Mothers do 'ave 'em" and the central character in Lloyd-Weber's "The Phantom of the Opera". Its a refers to a code his mother used to indicate (to someone, grandmother?) whether her illegitimate baby was a boy (with string) or a girl.
