Is there any difference between «in the night» and «at night»?

To me, "at night" means something happening more than once or on a regular basis during the night and 'in the night" means something happens only once or very infrequently during the night.
"I often hear Owls hooting at night." is different from, "I heard an owl hooting in the night." because the first one often happens and in the second, I am talking about a specific incident.
