I used this phrase in passing earlier today and just wanted to know it's origins - couldn't find it in the dictionary however. I have in mind that it's an abbreviated version of a word something like "conflabulation" (but I could be unintentionally making this word up !). I'd be grateful if anyone could help throw light on it - thanks !

According to the OED its a variation of Cofab, short for Confabulation, a talk together, familiar talk.

Thank you Marsh ! I can rest easy !
As far back as the 1870s, it was a mainly American version of 'confab' which was our version as early as 1740. Like so many things American, however, we imported it at some time.
