I dont know who first said it Roy, but it was certainly said way back in Frank's time, being a lancastrian it's possible.

I've also heard it said by George Formby and Hilda Baker also both Lancastrians.

I dont know how you would prove who first said it.

Frank Randles catch phrase I think was "The day that war broke out" while saying he would suck his little finger somewhat like the Austin powers villain. ( theres nothing new under the sun)

My grandfather - well, maybe he wasn't much of a comedian, but having been born in Keighley in 1891 his use of the phrase probably pre-dated Tommy Handley's.......
