Why is the suffix 'gate' used to signify a scandal?

Probably because of that whole Richard Nixon scandal, which took place at the Watergate Hotel. Or something like that.
just a foolish guess; the flood 'gates' are opening for other scandals relating to that person or persons?
Just to clarify: it was the Watergate building, not hotel, used by the democrats during the 1972 election, and raided by Nixon's republicans who planted bugs, etc.
