Latin word meaning 'for all' or 'for everyone' (because it was public transport as opposed to private carriages).

First applied to public vehicles in France in1828 and the following year adopted by a London firm in Marylebone. Previously public vehicles were called charabancs, open-top with rows of benches running the length of the vehicle - just the thing for a summer's day out to the seaside!
