where did the phrase 'one night stand come from'

The phrase was originally used in the theatrical world. As touring companies moved around the country, each stopping-off place was called a 'stand'. Often, there would be only one performance and that would be called 'a one-night stand'. Nowadays, of course, it refers to rather a different "one-off performance"!
