The reason for this, though, is that this form of usage - where there is a supposed number disagreement between the verb and subject - is not only in common usage, but has also been in regular literary and official usage, too. It's the same as the singular usage of 'they' (eg, 'anyone who thinks they know better is wrong'), often used to avoid a sexist usage of the so-called generic 'he'.
