what does " give them a shewing" or shoeing mean?

Shewing is an old spelling of showing. I would guess that something (Animals perhaps?) is being entered into a show. Shoeing is usually fitting an iron shoe to a horse's hoof, but it's not usual to say 'give them a shoeing'. It would be more usual to say 'shoe them'. Perhaps it would by useful if you give us the context in which you read or heard it.

I'd say 'give the a shoeing' is referring to kicking somebody repeatedly .

It's a term used in Rugby for Raking, when a player usually but not necessarily an opponent is in the way of the ball in a ruck.
