Why do some people use one quotation mark ( ' ) while others use double quotation marks ( " ) when it comes to dialogue? i.e "I like pie," said Krunk.

What is the correct usage of the quotation mark? And if within a dialogue there is a title of a book or a movie or a poem, how should one 'mark' the title?

Thanks in advance.

I would say use doubles for direct speech only; and single sfor anything else you need to denote. Having said that, many publishers use singles for direct speech too.

Titles of books, movies etc should be italicised, not set in quotes.

I believe that single quotes are a British phenomenon; in the US, double quote marks are always used, unless it's a quote within a quote.

Book and movie titles, as a rule, are italicized, and poem and story titles are enclosed in double quotation marks.
