Cyclones are areas of low pressure. The wind circulates around the centre of the low in an anticlockwise direction (northern hemisphere) or a clockwise direction southern hemisphere). A typhoon is the local name for a large cyclone in the Pacific region. Hurricanes are cyclones with a wind speed in excess of 64 knots.
