i have always used this phrase but my boyf has pointed out that it doesn't make sense and you say anally retentive. surely anally retarded is also acceptible??

I would have thought anally retentive (retentive meaning 'hold on to') is a euphamism for being full of s**t because you don't let it out that end, you just speak it. Retarded means 'backward' or 'not up to speed in the intelligence department'. I don't think that can apply to an anus but I could be wrong!

anally retentive does not mean you are full of ****...it means you cannot let things go and get tense and irritated at minor and petty things...i.e, people who correct other peoples minor mistakes, in a beligerent and long winded way and won't let it pass, or are always right but don't just think it, they will tell you and won't stop until you have agreed with them, or insist on telling you every little detail about their journey to work, or what they had for dinner last night, and even though they can see you are bored, won't stop until they have finished their speech, or have a bizarre routine for eating a sandwich that must be adhered to, and they get irritated if others don't follow all their rules and ways too...its indicative of someone in these situations with a clenched **** ****, that happens to people when they are tense and uptight, so that nothing at all could get out of it ...so i suppose it does mean 'full of ****' but not really in the way mentioned

i was actually using the phrase in reference to terry hatchet who seems like she is a bit uptight. perhaps neither of these suits...
