What does the shorthand police phrase MD mean, as in 'The MD matches the ....case' I've heard it a number of times recently on the telly. Is it something to do with the particulars of the crime?

Are you sure it's not 'M.O.' which is 'modus operandi' and means the method of carrying out the crime, which is consistent each time, leading police to conclude that the perpetrator is the same each time.
I've also heard MOE, which is 'method of entry'.

Ah yes, I mean MO. Oops. Thank you, thought it meant something like that. Been bugging me for ages.
